Carl trained as a director at the Royal Court on the Regional Theatre Young Director Scheme. He has been Artistic Director of the Royal Court Young People’s Theatre, an Associate Director of Birmingham Rep and Unicorn, and Writer in Residence at the Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds.
He is an experienced dramaturg and has also devised many playwriting projects with young people and adults. With Elyse Dodgson’s International Department at the Royal Court Theatre Carl has worked with playwrights in Brazil, China, India and Uganda.
His plays have been commissioned and produced by theatres all over England and around the world. He also continues to develop immersive work combining live and digital performance.
